A brand new year is upon us, and with it comes a slew of new commitments and New Years Resolutions. One of the most popular, which will come as no surprise to you I’m sure, is to lose weight.

Weight loss programs, products, and gym membership sales skyrocket at this time of year. There’s a new resolve to finally get this weight thing under control, once and for all.

Typically, as with most New Years Resolutions, there’s motivation and excitement to take control, take charge, and get into action.

But what usually winds up happening is that the initial swirl of excitement and determination wanes after several weeks and you fall back into old patterns and programming. The declarations that you’ll go to the gym 7 days a week, let only healthy organic food pass your lips, and get 8 hours of sleep religiously soon fall by the wayside.

Human beings are creatures of habit. We get accustomed to life being a certain way and no matter how much we’d like to create something different in our life, it can feel like we’re walking through mud to get to our destination–taking one step forward and two steps back.

Sadly, you probably think that you’re the only one struggling with this issue, and may even think there’s something wrong with you. I know those thoughts that are probably running around in your head. “What the heck is wrong with me? Why can’t I stick with this and have the body and well-being I want? I’m so tired of failing at this, over and over again. I guess I’m just destined to be this way.”

You want to know the truth? There’s nothing wrong with you, and you’re not alone in this struggle. I don’t care what change you’re wanting to make in your life–be it weight release, having more money, or improved relationships–we all face the same challenges here.

Going beyond where we currently are to where we want to be can be a daunting journey for all of us. It requires us to change our thinking. To change our lifestyle. To learn new information. To live from a place that’s new, unknown, and requires us to stretch and grow. To evolve.

And it requires the dedication, discipline, and tenacity to stay with it long enough, along with taking actions that will create what we desire until it becomes a new habit. A new way of BEING in the world. Where one day we arrive at a point that we stop and realize we are now embodying the change that we were seeking!

Here’s the biggest roadblocks I see to creating lasting and sustainable change with your body.

#1 You set your targets too high initially and aren’t able to stick with them until you see the results you desire. This translates to saying you’re going to run a marathon in a couple of months when the only moveroad closed 500ment you’ve done before this is to walk from the kitchen to the couch and back for the last several years. Is it possible? Yes. Will it happen? Probably not.

#2 You’re not clear on the root reason your soul is longing to have this experience. What is it you’re really after by releasing weight, or making any changes with your body? What is the energy behind what you’re wanting to create? Will you have fuller self-expression? Peace with yourself? More confidence?

#3 You’ve forgotten that you’re an infinite being with infinite potential and you’ve bought into limiting beliefs and programming that creates the point of view that having a body you love living in can never be YOUR reality. You’ve made real the false illusion that you’re limited by time, by age, by genetics, or any other stories that you’re currently buying into that say you can’t create this for yourself.

#4 You’re not receiving the support of all the resources available to you that can assist you in the in-between time of metamorphosis. This is the space where your initial excitement has waned and you’ve not yet brought into physical reality the body you desire. Here you want to draw to you every possible resource you have access to that will help keep you aligned with your vision, remind you that you’re an infinite powerful being, and you can totally do this!

#5 You don’t have awareness of or current access to more evolved tools and strategies that help create the new philosophy, mindset, and habits of someone who lives in a radiantly healthy body, feeling empowered and at peace in the skin she or he lives in.

And probably the biggest roadblock of all that I see which sabotages your success is a lack of self-love and self-compassion as you walk this path. I know this from personal experience. You set your sights high, you gather up your energy, get into action, then come to a roadblock which stops you in your tracks. You fall into old habits and patterns, and those self-judgements and negative self-talk show up in full force. It contracts your energy, shuts you down, and if you’re likeheart on door 500 me, you ask yourself, “Why bother? I can tolerate where I’m at. It’s not what I really want, but I can live with it.” Yet deep inside, you know that you’re more than this challenge. More than this setback. More than anything you’re presently experiencing in your life.

Stumbles and setbacks are normal and part of the process. Until we’ve practiced a new way of BEING and it’s second-nature, we aren’t going to hit the mark 100% of the time. Giving yourself tons of self-love and compassion as you evolve into the next greatest version of you is key to staying the course until you reach your destination.

And having someone supportive in your corner who’s been there, knows the terrain, and can point out guide posts along the way helps you stay the course and makes the journey a lot quicker as well. Reach out to family, friends or colleagues you know and trust who have the well-being you desire and ask them to support you. Or you can feel free to reach out to me and we can set up a time to chat.

So if changing your body in any capacity is something you’d like to create in 2015, I invite you to take a kinder and gentler approach with yourself and your body.

#1 Relax your focus so much on specific goals (ex: how many pounds, how many inches, etc.) and instead get curious on the energy of the FEELING you’d like to have.

#2 Before you run out and buy that gym membership, have your “exercise routine” be cultivating that FEELING you desire instead. Be curious, and ask the Universe, “How can I receive more ________ (fill in your emotion)?” More joy? Peace? Satisfaction? Self-expression? Confidence? Whatever your emotion is. “Universe, what’s possible here? What would it take for THAT to show up in my body and life?”

#3 Stay present and aware, consistently connecting to the energy of the feeling you desire, and follow the energy that matches the emotional energy you’re cultivating. When you follow the energy of the FEELING, you’ll be setting yourself up to receive the people and resources that are a vibratory match to your desired feeling state and will show up to contribute to YOU experiencing even more of that energy. You’ll be in alignment and KNOW what actions to take next that will support you in creating the body you desire.

Most important, consistently practice self-love and compassion with yourself. Just as you would with a child, remember that you’re growing into the next stage of your evolution. When the negative self-talk comes along, stand firmly in the wisdom of your Wise Future Self and see your present self from those loving eyes.

And move beyond failed New Year’s Resolutions into a whole new world of body creation possibilities. How does it get any better than this? Standing for you thriving in your body and life–
